At a time when some in society feel that new divides in our social fabric are developing along racial, political and religious lines, while others fear that political correctness is out of control to the point that a contrary opinion immediately results in one being negatively branded, here are a few thoughts on getting along at work:
- Remember that violence, threats and bullying are never acceptable. Furthermore, they are a sure-fire way to lose, not gain, respect.
- Treat others with the same level of respect that you would like. Want everyone to think like you? It’s not going to happen.
- Know that differing opinions are not invalid opinions. We are all refined by a lifetime of unique experiences. Sometimes we are further refined when we listen to other points of view.
- Smile, shake hands and care. We are more likely to work well together, and overlook differences, when we know and trust each other.
